Fractured Nose Repair

Fractured Nose Repair

Do you have a nose injury, or are you preparing for a fractured nose repair soon and are hoping to better understand the procedure? Here is an overview of all the information you will need to plan for the best possible experience:

What Symptoms Might Indicate That You Need A Fractured Nose Repair?

Not all nose fractures need surgery, and after an injury, it is important to see an ENT doctor within the first week. After the first week, the nose will begin to heal, and it will become more difficult to repair the damage. Here are a few issues that might lead your ENT doctor to recommend this surgery:

  • Serious bone fractures that need to be reset
  • Cartilage damage that needs to be repaired
  • The nasal septum has been damaged
  • Continuous/serious swelling or bleeding
  • Breathing impairment
  • Serious deformities

What is a Fractured Nose Repair?

After assessing and diagnosing the problem, your ENT doctor might recommend surgery. You may need additional testing before surgery so your ENT doctor can plan for your specific needs. Here are some treatments your ENT doctor may use:

  • Immediate partial/full realignment (even after this, you may require surgery)
  • Draining blood clots (e.g. Septal Hematoma)
  • Packing your nose with materials to stop the bleeding/keeping the nose in the correct place
  • Surgery to realign the nose
  • Surgery to repair the septum
  • Surgery to reconstruct the nose

How Do I Prepare for a Fractured Nose Repair?

Talk to your doctor about pre-operation policies, and what medicines or supplies you may need to have at home after the surgery. This will include any pain relief, medicine for fighting infection, supplies for "packing the nose" and other supplies your doctor might recommend.

What Is The Recovery Time After a Fractured Nose Repair?

You should expect to spend at least 1-2 weeks at home after the surgery. Face injuries and surgeries swell and bleed more than other parts of the body, which can mean more time at home than expected. Depending on your line of work, you may need to prepare for a different way of working to avoid post-op injury. Avoid sports, exercise, or anything that might risk anything moving/causing pain to your nose for 6 weeks after your surgery. Full recovery usually happens between 4-6 weeks depending on the extent of the injury.

How Do I Know if I Am Healing After a Fractured Nose Repair?

Call your doctor if you experience continuous bleeding or excessive swelling. If you are experiencing shortness of breath, allergic reactions, severe headaches, or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor immediately so they can help resolve the issues.
