Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (Gallbladder Removal)

What Is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?

Cholecystectomy, known colloquially as gallbladder removal, was the eighth most common procedure performed in 2011. Traditionally, cholecystectomy has been performed with one large incision made across the upper abdomen.

Due to incredible advances in medical knowledge and techniques, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is now performed with a laparoscope and small incisions. A laparoscope is a tiny tube with a little camera attached to the end. This medical device is inserted into one incision and lets your surgeon see your gallbladder on a screen in the operating room rather than through an extensive incision. The gallbladder is removed with tiny operating tools through a different small incision.

What Is the Recovery Time for Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?

While you can resume most of your daily activities within a week or two of the procedure, the entire recovery process lasts six weeks. Most patients return to sedentary jobs within five business days.

Clients who work non-sedentary jobs typically return to work within ten business days. However, you must refrain from strenuous weightlifting for 42 days post-op.

How Does One Prepare for Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?

To prepare for laparoscopic gallbladder removal, stop eating and drinking in the four hours leading up to your procedure. Having an empty stomach when you are under anesthesia ensures you will not experience any side effects. It would be best if you also stopped taking any medications or supplements that can thin your blood. Preparations for your unique case should be always be discussed with your doctor.

Because this procedure happens under general anesthesia, you should not drive yourself home. Therefore, to prepare for your laparoscopic gallbladder removal, you need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your procedure.

What Diagnoses Are Treated with Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is used to treat the symptoms of gallstones, such as:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Abdominal pain
  • Back pain
  • Chest pain
  • Shoulder pain

This procedure is also used to treat the symptoms of bile duct blockage from the gallbladder or liver. It can even treat jaundice, pancreatitis, bile duct gallstones, gallbladder inflammation, large gallbladder polyps, and gallbladder infections.
