What is Ureteroscopy?

When you have a ureteroscopy, your doctor, a urologist, will insert a special scope into your bladder and ureter to visualize your bladder, the ureters, and even your kidneys.

This can be done as a way to diagnose any problems, though it can also be used to fix some problems that may occur.

How does one prepare for this procedure?

You won't have to do much to prepare for your procedure. Most of the time, it is an outpatient procedure so you will be able to go home as soon as it is completed and you have recovered from anesthesia.

Most of the time, your bladder will need to be empty before the procedure so you will have to visit the bathroom prior to the procedure.

There are times when general anesthesia is used so it is important that you talk to your doctor to see when you can eat and drink prior to your procedure. You also need to talk to him or her about your medications. You may have to stop certain medications.

What is the recovery time after having a Ureteroscopy done?

Recovery is relatively quick after a ureteroscopy. You will be able to go home as soon as the anesthesia wears off. You may notice some discomfort when you urinate. Some may struggle to urinate due to injury to the area. You may also notice some bleeding. This is normal and should go away in a few days.
